Archives Timeline: In the Beginning

An 1897 ordinance creating the Department of the Territorial Secretary contained the first reference to a public archives in Saskatchewan. The ordinance stated that the Territorial Secretary was to be “the keeper of all registers and archives of the territories.” When Saskatchewan became a province in 1905, this provision was incorporated into the legislation which governed the activities of the Provincial Secretary; however, the Provincial Secretary never actively managed government records.
