Archives Timeline: Lean Years

The original plan was that the Hillsdale Street location for the Archives would be temporary.  Unfortunately, the economic recession of the late 1980s and early 1990s meant that the government was not able to provide funding for a new building. Moreover, the shrinking economy led to reduced funding for the Archives’ programs and services.

Over the next decade staffing levels at the Archives were reduced, resulting in a growing backlog of unprocessed record collections. In the 1990s, the Sound Archives Programme was further reduced and eventually ended.
