Saskatchewan Legislative Building Time Capsule - Introduction

Time Capsules – An Introduction

Time capsules are sealed containers containing artifacts and documents, often placed to commemorate an event such as the laying of a cornerstone of a building.  They mark a tradition of leaving something for a future generation – a glimpse into the culture and way of life.

Common contents for time capsules include books, documents, newspapers, photographs, stamps and coins.

The first recorded time capsule was buried by Esarhaddon, a 7th Century king of Assyria and they continue to be placed today.

A victory stele for Esarhaddon

The International Time Capsule Society estimates there are 10,000 to 15,000 capsules currently in place around the world.  They are often meant to be opened on a fixed date or anniversary; however, some researchers estimate up to 80% of time capsules will be forgotten and never opened.

On October 4th, 1909, with great pomp and circumstance, a time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, then under construction.  On December 15, 2011 it was opened.  That time capsule is documented in this exhibit.
