What does the Provincial Archives accept?

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan acquires records of archival value in a planned and integrated manner according to predetermined acquisition and appraisal criteria.

Records of archival value are those which document the Saskatchewan experience. They document the efforts and  experiences of individuals, groups, institutions, corporate bodies, and other organizations that have become nationally or internationally recognized and have a bearing on the province. They also record the physical environment in Saskatchewan, as well as events and trends (cultural, political, economic, social, demographic, scientific, and religious) having a provincial scope.

Private Records

Private donation to the Provincial Archives.

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan has a mandate to acquire private records of provincial significance. In order to ensure that the best material is being preserved, we have developed acquisition criteria, as well as a process that considers all factors, to ensure the best records are being preserved.

Books or published records are rarely acquired by the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan unless there are special and compelling reasons to include them in an archival collection.

Also, artefacts are rarely acquired by the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan. Donors are referred to an appropriate museum authority, unless there are special and compelling reasons to include artefacts in an archival collection.

Please see our FAQ section for more information on donating records and the donation process.

Public Records

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan is the official repository of those public records that are judged by the Archives to have permanent archival value.

The Archives and Public Records Management Act applies to all institutions of the executive government of Saskatchewan and to any prescribed board, commission, crown corporation, or agency as defined by The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The Archives and Public Records Management Act also applies to the Legislative Assembly Service and officers of the Legislative Assembly. Provisions for the acquisition of ministerial records, cabinet records, records of the Executive Council, and court records are also contained within the Act.

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan provides advice to government in relation to standards and procedures for records management and selects and transfers to the care and control of the Provincial Archives the non-current public records of historic value.
